Why He Came

I’m not going to try to explain what happened in Newtown, Conn. I can’t. To understand it, I would either have to be an FBI profiler or mentally ill. It is an evil beyond my comprehension.
Such evil against the most innocent among us is not isolated to modern times. Consider Herod’s carnage against toddlers in the days of Jesus.
Then Herod, when he saw that he was deceived by the wise men, was exceedingly angry; and he sent forth and put to death all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all its districts, from 2 years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the wise men.
– Matthew 2:16
I will never comprehend the mind of someone capable of such things, but this I do understand: Evil is not new to the world. In fact, it is why Jesus came.
For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.
– Luke 19:10
This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.
– 1 Timothy 1:15
Evil was born in the garden, where God’s children chose to turn their backs on perfect fellowship with their Creator and embark on the dark path into sin.
Their son Cain was the first murderer, putting his righteous brother Abel to death out of jealousy. Before long, the entire world became evil’s stage, and God was grieved that He even made man.
The Lord saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time.
– Genesis 6:5
God would start over with one man – Noah – and his family, and the flood that swept the earth became a symbol of redemption. But as the ranks of man grew, so evil grew. God would eventually intervene to provide the final and ultimate blood sacrifice for the forgiveness of our sins.
God would freely give of Himself. Love would come down as the most vulnerable among us. And Love would come down to die.
That Baby born in a stable, laid in a manger, was born with a death sentence on His head. No one took His life; He freely gave it to redeem us from our sins.
Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to give His life as a ransom for many.
– Matthew 20:28
Evil has a high cost, but it is a cost that God Himself was willing to pay on our behalf. All He asks in return is that we place our trust in Him and Him alone.
Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.
– John 1:12
Do not look for answers to why atrocities happen; you won’t find them. Look only for the solution to the problem of evil. Look to Jesus Christ.
May His peace be with you and with all who are grieving this Christmas season.
