A middle schooler so defeated by bullying that he shoots himself to death in his school. A grandfather who kills his daughter and his six grandchildren, then calls 911 to tell the dispatcher what he has done and promises her police will find him dead as well.

I can sit here today and issue a generic statement about how all of us occasionally feel betrayed by people to whom we have shown kindness. Yes, we all eventually are slapped in the face by people we’ve trusted. But today it’s personal, and the past few days have been a struggle for me.

Like most mothers, I have a little grizzly mama in me. Mess with my kids, and I just may rear up on my hind legs and get a little wild. But life does mess with our kids, and it never stops being hard. Maybe sometimes it’s harder on us than on them. Or maybe it just feels like it.

Lately my heart has been weighed down by stories of incredible pain – stories of unthinkable suffering among people throughout Africa, of a family losing three loved ones in rapid succession while dealing with life-threatening health challenges, of a newly adopted baby given little hope of quality of life or even longterm survival, of a mother and toddler both facing cancer.
