Clinging to God’s Promises

For all the promises of God find their Yes in Him. That is why it is through Him that we utter our Amen to God for His glory.—2 Corinthians 1:20

A few weeks ago, our pastor announced our congregation would embark on a 50-day fast as we prayed about the vision God has given him for our church. My husband, bless his heart, prayerfully determined we would go on the Whole 30 diet – except that in this case, it’s Whole 50. I honestly gave little thought initially to the spiritual component of the fast because just the thought of 50 days without some of my favorite things—dairy, raw sugar and chocolate—already made me hungry.

But God wanted my attention on the spiritual. He was already working in my life, except that I didn’t see it. And I didn’t have any idea how thankful I would be for this period of prayer and cleansing.

The morning of the kickoff, greeters distributed flyers listing 50 promises of God. I glanced at it and stuffed it into my Bible not realizing how precious those promises were to become to me.

But by that evening, I was clinging to that piece of prayer and praying those promises aloud. That night I reminded God, as if He needs reminding, “Do you remember, Lord? This is what You said!” In truth, it is not He who needs reminding; it is us.

We forget that He never promised us we would be exempt from suffering. (See 1 Peter 2:21 and 2 Timothy 3:12.) We will suffer just as Jesus suffered, but our suffering, like this life, is but a vapor; it is for our good and His glory.

Because He tells us . . .

His love is unchanging.

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?—Romans 8:35

His love is unconditional.

I (the Lord) will never leave you or forsake you.—Hebrews 13:5

The glory that awaits us is so much greater than our pain.

For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison.—2 Corinthians 4:17

He’ll see us through our trials, whatever they are.

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.—1 Corinthians 10:13

He will sanctify all who are found in Him.

And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.—Philippians 1:6

He does the impossible.

But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”—Matthew 19:26

Jesus Himself is pleading on our behalf.

Therefore He is able to save completely those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to intercede for them.—Hebrews 7:25

He sees us through the righteousness of Christ.

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.—Romans 8:1

Someday soon we shall know perfect joy and perfect peace.

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.—Revelation 21:4

God loves you with an everlasting love. Jesus knows our pain; He lived it. Abide in Him, and He will abide in you. And someday—I pray someday soon—you’ll have a powerful testimony of His deliverance. May He be glorified in the valley as well as on the mountaintop.
