I’m not going to try to explain what happened in Newtown, Conn. I can’t. To understand it, I would either have to be an FBI profiler or mentally ill. It is an evil beyond my comprehension.

The Cost of Cantaloupe

Cantaloupe can have far-reaching implications.

We were on our way to our son’s college graduation rehearsal, followed by the blessed event itself, in the Florida Panhandle. News Flash: Thanksgiving Is Not an Annual Event

Turkey with gravy. Stuffing. Mashed potatoes. Cranberry sauce. Sweet potato casserole. Pumpkin pie. Autumnal weather. Football. Family. The upcoming Christmas season. These are the things we love about Thanksgiving.

Family strife. Vacant seats at the table. A scarcity where there should be a bounty. The reminders of loneliness and need and grief that loom over the season like foreboding clouds. Black Friday. (more…)

Like a Witch, and I Don’t Mean Samantha

 

When I grew up, my long black hair caused me to typecast myself year after year as a witch on Halloween. Samantha on Bewitched proved, after all, that witchcraft was fun and innocent. And I must admit that something in me wished I could manipulate my crumbling world with a twitch of a nose.
